For two years Lightworkers Gifts has shined a healing light on the West Valley. And next Saturday, the store is celebrating, with an anniversary party featuring intuitive readings, acupressure and yoga presentations and plenty of giveaways.
It's a celebration, but it is also the latest way Lightworkers is helping people in the West Valley. The unassuming shop at Peoria and 51st avenues is the labor of love of Angel Monachelli. The former Xerox executive started her path of healing seven years ago to deal with family medical issues. "My family has a history of lupus, fibromyalgia and arthritis. And I knew I could follow the pill route they took, or I could go holistic. I had a massage therapist come and she did reiki on me and it was the best I'd ever felt," she says.
That experience inspired her to pursue reiki. She is now a reiki master and teaches others at Lightworkers. She is quick to assert she is not a healer, though. "I don't want to give false impressions," she says. "It is all energy, I can just help channel." Eventually she decided to open a store to share her gifts with the community. She found the perfect spot in an unassuming strip center a few doors down from a Sprouts Market, and with her ever-present dog Dax at her side, opened Lightworkers in 2005. "I had certain criteria I wanted for my shop, but I felt drawn to the west side. There are places where you can get readings, and other holistic stores out here, but there isn't anywhere that offers the breadth of classes we do," she says. "We want to be a light shining here."
She may not be a miracle worker, but Monachelli is still helping people on the west side through her store. When she started Lightworkers, Monachelli offered a handful of healing sessions and workshops. Now her schedule is bursting with a diverse variety of classes, from and tai chi and bellydancing to more esoteric offerings like dowsing and pet communication, as well as bi-monthly intuitive fairs. In August alone Lightworkers offers over 50 public classes and workshops. She's even expanded, adding a large side room in June to accommodate the ever-growing classes. "Take a look around the shop, but more importantly take a class. It isn't just buying something, it's about doing something to improve yourself," she says. "Because, as our slogan says, growth can be fun."
